Kauffman

Evan “Ray” Kauffman, 73, died Aug. 29, 2010, at a Topeka hospice. He was born Aug. 26, 1937, in Circleville, the son of Harvey and Macle Pool Kauffman. He graduated from Circleville High School. Mr. Kauffman worked in the printing business for more than 30 years and also worked for Blue Cross and Blue Shield for a short time. He was a member of First Congregational Church, Topeka, Masonic Lodge 20, Circleville, and HI 12 17, Topeka. He married Marlyne Phelps on Sept. 3, 1960. She survives. Other survivors include two sons, Randy and Mark; three brothers, Rex, Ned and Ted; two sisters, Carol and Linda; and two grandchildren, Shawn and Jessica. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Maxine. Mr. Kauffman was cremated. A celebration of his life and 50th wedding anniversary is planned from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 4 at Lake Shawnee Shelterhouse 6. His ashes will be scattered at 1 p.m. Sept. 5 at First Congregational Church, 1701 S.W. Collins, Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to The Leukemia Lymphoma Society, Kansas Chapter, 300 N. Weber
Gerva Dean Ann Weber, 83, Neponset, Ill., died Aug. 30, 2010. She was born June 30, 1927, in Whiting, the daughter of Elmer and Anna Brandt Klahr. She graduated from Netawaka High School and attended Washburn College in Topeka. She and her husband moved to Neponset, Ill., in 1960. Mrs. Weber taught school for seven years in Kansas, was a waitress for 18 years at the former Hi-Way Café in Buda, Ill., was a pre-school teacher’s aide at the former St. Paul’s Lutheran School in Kewanee, Ill., and retired from the former R.J. Boar’s restaurant in Kewanee. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church of Kewanee. She married C. Robert Weber on April 30, 1950, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Netawaka. He survives. Other survivors include a son, Charles Robert “Chuck” Weber Jr. and fiancee Julie Overbeck, Cypress, Texas,; a daughter, Peggy Faber and husband Steve, Kewanee, Ill.; four grandchildren, Joy Hernandez, John Jacob Hernandez and wife Meghan, Ashley Weber and Chas Weber; a great-grandson, Logan Hernandez; a brother, Delmer “Corky” Klahr and wife Ruth, Netawaka; and three sisters, Evelyn Niehaus, Lincoln, Neb., Alma Jean Bowser, Holton, and Betty Ann Barnes and husband Les, Valley Falls. She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Russell Weber. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sept. 3 at the Schueneman-Tumbleson Funeral Home, Kewanee, Ill. Pastor Kenneth Wegener will officiate. Burial will be held in Floral Hill Cemetery, Neponset. Visitation will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 2, at the funeral home. Bartley

Marian Louise Herbers Bartley, 55, Overland Park, formerly of Holton, died Aug. 23, 2010, at her home. She was born Nov. 29, 1954, in Topeka, the daughter of Alvin J. and Charlotte E. Cummings Herbers. She graduated from Holton High School in 1972 and Stormont-Vail School of Nursing in 1978. Ms. Bartley had worked as a nurse in Topeka and Kansas City. She was a member of Heartland Community Church in Olathe. Survivors include a son, Jason Hunter, Independence, Mo.; three sisters, Julia Fahrmeier, Holton, Susan Cole, Girard, and Lois Sechrist, St. Louis, Mo.; three brothers, Ralph Herbers, Holton, James Herbers, Newton, and Jack Herbers, Topeka; and her stepmother, Betty Herbers, Holton. Ms. Bartley was cremated. A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 4 at Mercer Funeral Home in Holton. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time Sept. 4. Hay
Anna Elizabeth Carson Hay, 93, Sabetha, formerly of Wetmore, died Aug. 28, 2010, at a Topeka hospital. She was born Feb. 24, 1917, in Netawaka, the daughter of John Carl and Mary Jane Goldsberry Carson. She graduated from Netawaka High School in 1935. Mrs. Hay was a homemaker. She attended the United Methodist Church and was a former member of United Methodist Women. She married Glenn Edwin Hay in 1935. He died in 1960. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Jo Bolia; and two brothers, Jack Wesley Carson and Lowell Francis Carson. Survivors include a son, Michael Hay and wife Patricia, Mesa, Ariz.; a daughter, Barbara Jean Thomas, Mesa, Ariz.; a brother, Robert C. Carson and wife June, Wetmore; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Aug. 31 at Wetmore United Methodist Church. Burial will be held in Netawaka Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until service time Aug. 31. Penner
Thelma Marie Gerhardt Penner, 77, Kokomo, Ind., died Aug. 23, 2010. She was born Jan. 10, 1933, in Netawaka, the daughter of Harry Albert Emil and Louise Marie Stuenkel Gerhardt. Mrs. Penner worked as a cook and cafeteria supervisor at Maple Crest Middle School in the 1970s and was self-employed as a seamstress. She was a resident at Waterford Place Health Campus, Kokomo, Ind. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi social, cultural and civic sorority and a missionary and quilter within the Lutheran Women’s Missionary Service Guild at The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, Kokomo, where she was an active member for more than 50 years. She married John Edward Penner on Sept. 12, 1954. He survives. Other survivors include two sons, David Wayne Penner and wife Janet, Lake Zurich, Ill. and Gary Edward Penner and wife Janis, Fort Wayne, Ind.; a daughter, Sara Louise Schamerloh and husband Richard, Fort Wayne, Ind.; four grandchildren, Andrew, Alison, Janie and Claire; and two sisters: Lois, Topeka, and Dorothy, Omaha, Neb. She was preceded in death by her parents and four siblings, Linda Kay Auten Gerhardt, Raymond Gerhardt, Lyle Gerhardt and Eldon “Joe” Gerhardt. Funeral services were held Aug. 27 at The Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Kokomo, with the Rev. William Allison officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
